watercolor 2009.8

I liked the sketch,
but I'm not happy about this finish,
so I think I'll photoshop the color and details later.

so far, I am thinking to lighten the color of the girl's hair a bit
(yes, I decided it's "she")
and make the lion's head a bit smaller.

could anyone give me a suggestion besides that?

2009.9.22 edit>
lion's ear & eyes, the girl's face, back ground color fixed.
thank you so much for everyone gave me an advice!

As a fellow watercolour artist, I can only say you've got some mad painting skills going on there!

The colours are great, I think. They're wide in range, but all toned down really well so that I wouldn't change them if I were you. One main point, for me, is always that they work in a thumbnail, and I can assure you that they do!

Here's what I often do with a watercolour when I'm unhappy with the colours (even if nobody else is ;)): I open the pic in Photoshop, put a new layer on top of the painting, set the layer properties to "colour" and the layer opacity to somewhere around 20%, and then fill the whole layer with one single colour that'll tint the underlying painting nicely without meddling with the picture in any way. A warm colour would work great for that here, I think, if you were to try it.

I wouldn't change the size of the lion's head either. It's massive, but that seems very fitting to me. Makes him appear very strong and kingly, and her more fragile by comparison, which underlines the picture's impact nicely.

That said: fave! ;)
